Atiku Cries As He Collects His PDP Nomination Form
Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, wept today after he was gifted the Expression of Interest and Nomination form at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) headquarters in Abuja.
Members of the Atiku Support Groups (ASG) reportedly bought the forms, a total of N12 million, and presented them to him at his Presidential Campaign Office in Abuja on Friday, August 31, 2018, Naija News understands
The former vice president was moved to tears when a member of the ASG, Adekemi Adesanya, described the terrible state of affairs in the country. The presidential aspirant was pictured wiping his eyes with a white handkerchief to fight back tears.
When it was his turn to talk, Atiku said the fact that he is trusted to provide solutions to Nigeria’s numerous challenges encourages him to work for a better nation.
He said, “The event today is significant and historic because this is the only time in my political career that young men and women in this country have come together without my knowledge or even consent to contribute their own hard-earned money to buy me an Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms.
“You could have seen that one of the ladies who spoke virtually succeeded in getting me to weep. This is because she aptly described the challenges every Nigerian is facing in this country today and she believed honestly and sincerely from the bottom of her heart that I could be an instrument of addressing those challenges.
“So, for such a woman to believe that I have got those leadership qualities and including those of you who have brought out your monies to buy this form, is one of the most serious challenges I have ever faced in my political career.
“And believe me, addressing those challenges? is possible because we have brought young men and women, Nigerians who have got the talents, who have got the education, who have got the experience, who have got all what it take to honestly turn this country around.”
Atiku is one in a long list of aspirants contesting for the PDP’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2019 presidential election.

Voters In Edo Decry Slow Process Of Voters Registration Exercise, Other Challenges.
The voters registration exercise in Edo State today, has been plagued by heavy downpour of rain.
This is even as workers thronged in their thousand defied the heavy downpour on Friday in Benin City, the State capital, to take advantage of the work-free day declared by Governor Godwin Obaseki, and register in the Continuous Voter Registration exercise by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Individuals who spoke to newsmen, commended the Edo State Government for declaring Friday work-free, explaining that they had come out to use the opportunity to register.
Mr. Eboigbe Wellington, who was at the INEC Registration Centre located at Asoro Slope, Ekehuan Road, Benin City, decried the slow pace of work by officials of INEC and called on the federal government to extend the registration deadline to enable more people register.
He also said that the heavy and persistent rainfall in Benin City has discouraged many people from coming out to register as the INEC centres have no place for people to take cover when it rains.
“The heavy rainfall has not helped matters. People have no place to hide when it rains and as you can see, many of us are drenched while looking for where to hide from the rainfall,”
Mr. John Ohenhen, who was also at the INEC Registration Centre at Asoro Hill, Ekehuan Road, said he was at the centre to collect his voter card having registered in December 2017.
He urged INEC to deploy more officials to make the registration process faster.
The Nation reports that this situation is almost the same in other parts of the state as workers turned out in their numbers to register
It has been reports that INEC had earlier announced suspension of the exercise for today, the 31st of August,2018.
PDP Holds Solidarity Rally For Saraki In Kwara
The party faithfuls marched through the streets in Kaiama, the Headquarters of the local council.
The Saraki support rally is coming 24 hours after the President of the Nigerian Senate declared his intention to contest the seat of the presidency.
All political office holders from the area at both the state and local government levels participated in the rally that lasted for hours.
The Chairman of Kaiama Local Government Council, Mallam Abubakar Abdullahi-Bata, said that the rally was to demonstrate the support the people of the area for the senate leader.
According to him, the large turnout has corrected an insinuation that PDP is dead in the community.
“The people of Kaiama are for Saraki because we believe in his leadership.
“We are ready to follow him to any party he wishes to lead us to because we have benefited immensely from him,” he said.
Dr Aminat Ahmed, the state Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, who also took part in the rally, said it was organised to correct the misconception that the people of Kaiama had rejected the leadership of Saraki.
Mallam Ahmed Ibn-Mohammed, who is representing Kaiama/Kenmaji/Wajibe constituency, noted that Saraki’s belief in the youth was what endeared him into the minds of the people of the area.
“For giving a youth like me an opportunity to represent my people at the state Assembly is a manifestation of his visionary leadership and belief in the youth”, he said.

Aminu Tambuwal Ready For Primaries Or Concensus As He Picks Nomination Form At PDP Secretariat.
Tambuwal who defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PDP early August, stormed the Wadata Plaza headquarters of the opposition party in Abujain company of his supporters on Thursday evening.
While he entertained newsmen, Tambuwal expressed confidence that the party would conduct credible primary if the aspirants did not agree on a consensus candidate.
In his words,
I can’t say there is no need for consensus; it is part of democratic process. If there is a possibility of it, why not? If it is not possible, then, we all go for the primary,”
“But I believe that PDP of today is capable of organising free, fair, credible and transparent primaries.”
Tambuwal said going by his antecedents he had the capability to confront the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its likely candidate.
“I believe you need to check back my political antecedents. I have always confronted with this kind of hostile environment,” he said.
“You remember how I emerged as speaker of house of representatives and how I remained there as speaker of house of representatives.
“So I am not discouraged by whatever that may come up as a challenge from the administration.” He said.
On the issue of herdsmen/farmers crisis, Tambuwal said it was a major security of concern to every Nigerian.
“We must look at the issue very comprehensively and proffer solution to it,” he said.
“I believe it is an ?issue every responsible government must address and I assure you we can take it head on and resolve it.”
Tambuwal was elected speaker of the house of representatives under the platform of PDP but defected to APC in 2014.
He won the governorship ticket of the APC and defeated the PDP candidate in the 2015 election.
Oshiomhole’s Reaction To Saraki’s Declared Presidential Ambition.
That Saraki has picked his nomination form at the Peoples democratic party secretariat, just a day after he declared his presidency ambition for 2019.
Noting that he has been vindicated about his comments that Senate President left the Party because of his personal ambition and not because he had the interest of the nation at heart, Oshiomhole who met with APC leaders from Kwara State, charged APC members in Kwara State to jettison their personal ambitions and work towards ending the reign of Saraki in Kwara politics.
Chief Press Secretary to Oshiomhole, Simon Ebegbulem quote the APC Chairman as saying “when I was saying that all these defections is not about APC but the personal ambition of these people, they took hired writers to say I was being too hard. But Saraki’s declaration has vindicated me.
“Thank God he has moved on because his inordinate ambition was almost destroying our party but he has failed. These are not principled politicians but bread and butter politicians who can go extra miles to pursue their selfish ambition and never think about the well-being of Nigerians.
“As things stands today, APC remains the darling of the Nigeria people. Because PDP was the vomit of yesterday, our people will not chew it back today, not under three and half years. People have not forgotten and people will never forget. In fact what a senior palace chief in Nigeria said, he said this generation of Nigerians will not forgive the PDP in a hurry. Even to say you want to forgive you must do reparation.
“The damage they did to our economy, the damage they did to our electoral process, even the culture of rigging was institutionalized by them. They introduced do or die politics. They are the ones buying weapons for young people to go into thuggery while their own children are schooling abroad. They introduced all these vices”.
He said that reclaiming Kwara state from the grip of Saraki is a task that must be done, and asked APC leaders to ensure they conclude the election of executives from the wards to the state this weekend.
He said “the last time I spoke with the Minister he told me we have accomplished 80 or 85 per cent, that for me is not good enough because we don’t have more time. So this week we must achieve hundred per cent by whatever means. If you can’t do it, we have to help you get it done.
“The two Deputy National chairmen working with the National Organizing Secretary and the North central Vice Chairman constitute a committee to complete whatever is left. It will not exceed Sunday this week.
“I also want to appeal very strongly, that at this hour, we don’t want a situation where because of what is happening in Kwara, people who ordinarily will be quite happy to be a strong pillar of support, everybody want to be a governor, everybody want to be a Senator or in the House of Reps.
“Our party is a party of change and we want to discourage people from putting their personal interest over and above the interest of the people of Kwara state. I am able to say under the leadership of the Minister, he has repeatedly said it that his interest is not for him to contest for the governorship of Kwara state or any elective office. I don’t think it can be more selfless than that.
“I am very impressed with the enthusiasm of the people of Kwara state. They are experiencing a new dawn, a new sense of freedom and a sense of ownership of the APC where we are trying to do bottom up rather than top down.
“Where we have politics of inclusion, no god father, everybody matters. Now I superintend over the liquidation of god fathers in Edo state, now I will not be here and allow and support the emergence of a new god father.
“When we vanquished the god fathers we created a level playing field for equal opportunity to participate and that is what I think we have achieved so far and we need to take full advantage of that to do what need to be done for us to get on with the job of organizing, mobilizing.
“I believe all of us, the APC leadership, we are anxious to come to Kwara state, to interface with the great people of Kwara state, beyond llorin to other major cities in Kwara.
“Let them know and carry the message of change and use the broom to sweep away the past, including the thorn umbrella. The task of sweeping away the past and rebuilding a new Kwara is a task that must be done.
“That should give you the energy, the incentive and the appropriate spirit to work together so that victory will be ours, not for our own good but for the good of the great people of Kwara state who have been oppressed for such a long long time. Like they say they can be many days for the thief one day for the owner”.
Atiku Gathers Support As he Submits Nomination Form.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged his supporters to go with him to the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party when to submit his presidential nomination and expression of interest forms.
He said by doing so, he and his supporters would be sending a strong signal to the party about his popularity.
He added that a large number of his supporters who will accompany him to the party secretariat would also leave the party with no choice than to give him the Presidential ticket to contest the 2019 election.
Atiku made the appeal at Abuja on Friday when his supporters presented him with the party’s presidential nomination and expression of interest forms to enable him to take part in the PDP presidential primary slated for between October 5 and 6 in Abuja.
In his words “The undertaking I’m going to give you is that it is our job together, and I promise you? we are going to do it together.
“Let me once again extend to you my greatest administration for this gesture you have done to me and I believe as you purchased the forms so you will also run around to make sure that I ?have been duly nominated from different parts of this country and that when I go to submit the forms I will again enjoy your company and support.
“And on that day let us overwhelm the PDP Secretariat, let us bring Abuja to a standstill. I bet you, by the time we overwhelm the Secretariat and bring Abuja to a standstill, the PDP will have no alternative than to give us the ticket.”
He also said that he took part in the presidential election in 2007 not because he thought he could win, but to make a statement which he said he succeeded in making.

Kalu Promises To Deliver South-East To APC
Former Governor of Abia State, Orji Kalu, has reacted to the report that he is planning to defect to the Peoples Democratic Party from the All Progressives Congress, he said APC is “where all Nigerians of note are sitting”.
Kalu stated this while saying that politicians were defecting because of their personal interest and not the interest of the people.
The former governor while speaking with NAN, described the trend in defection as lack of ideology among the nation’s political class.
He stated that politicians should learn to play politics of ideology.
He said, “Those politicians that are defecting are doing so for their selfish interest because they felt that they would not get the ticket from their former parties.
“You saw that when I left the Peoples Democratic Party I did not return rather, I joined APC because it meets my expectations and that is where all Nigerians of note are sitting.’’
Kalu also assured that he was determined to bring the Southeast geo-political zone into the mainstream of the nation’s politics.
“I am currently working hard day and night to ensure that APC wins the governorship and National Assembly positions in all the states in the zone.

Ogbonnia Says Buhari Frustrated In Fight Against Corruption
SKC Ogbonnia, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, has reacted to the statement of President Muhammadu buhari at the opening ceremony of the Annual General Conference of the Nigeria Bar Association on Monday.
Recall that the President, while speaking had stated that lawyers should put issues of national security above the rule of law.
Ogbonnia, in a statement on Friday stated that Buhari is right, but also very wrong, he further said that the President is frustrated and confused that his corruption fight was not yielding much results compared to when he was a military dictator.
He wrote: “The message would not have been a big issue if the messenger is not Muhammadu Buhari. Having headed one of the most dreaded dictatorial military regimes in modern history, where human rights abuses were common, a major reason Nigerians allowed Buhari back to the corridors of power was his pledge to fight corruption and abide by the rule of law. Like many, he had wondered why the war against corruption has been an endless failure and vowed to win it this time. And we believed him.
“But we are all finding out the hard way: Fighting corruption with Nigeria’s brand of rule of law is easier said than done. For example, the rule of law includes an ancient tenet of criminal law, Presumption of Innocence. This term, in Nigeria, has meant that corrupt politicians are not only presumed innocent until proven guilty, they also have the liberty to influence the courts to adjourn corrupt cases interminably. Buhari’s apparent difficulty in navigating between the rule of law and leadership is where his current war against corruption came crashing down.
“The president deserves pity here, though. Considering that he had achieved a measurable success on the war on corruption as a military leader, with little or no regard to rule of law, Buhari is very frustrated that he cannot record similar success on the same problem as a democratic president. He is frustrated on how some politicians with undeniable evidence of massive corrupt enrichment at the time of arrest are allowed to walk free for decades, waiting for endless trial, in the name of rule of law. Today, Buhari even appears confused on which way to go. Does he continue by toeing the line of rule of law and keep failing? Or does he revert to his old play book of violating human rights while getting the job done?
“But Buhari is still very wrong on three fundamental grounds.
“First, the cover with national interest and security is crudely selective. The clear optics is that Buhari espouses rule of law only when his party members or tribe are the culprits, but he goes to abuse all rights when perceived opponents or opposing tribes are the victims.
“Second, the history will not forgive Buhari for making the contravention of the rule a common phenomenon. The president had every opportunity to have capitalized on his overflowing popularity early in his regime to influence the Legislature to enact enabling Acts that could have strengthened some of the laws he is currently abusing with reckless abandon.
“Thirdly, Buhari is wrong by overheating the polity by presenting what he is not well equipped to defend. It is obvious that someone from his team crafted the line on rule of law and national security, which is mundane, but the president has shown that he is not capable of weaving the ensuing debate in such a way that it can be seen in a positive sense. A dynamic leader would thrash the opposing voices in a simple Q & A press conference. But that is not Buhari’s forte.
“Overall, leadership is all about influence. Instead of carrying on like an emperor, it is incumbent upon President Buhari to learn how to influence the Nigerian people and other arms of government towards the attainment of national goals. Instead of continuing to appear lawless in course of national interests, Buhari should—without further delay—maximize his presidential power to influence the legislature to enact new Acts that can override imperfect laws.”
Engineers Call For Reforms In Petroleum Sector
Sustainable reforms has been called for by the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), in the oil and gas industry to ensure responsible petroleum exploration.
Aishatu Umar, NSE chairman, Giri chapter, Abuja made the call yesterday at the 3rd Engineering Week and Annual Lecture.
He explained that the reforms would not only boost production activities, influence economic development in oil producing host communities but also preserve human and environmental health.
The theme of this year’s lecture was “Environmental Issues in the Oil and Gas Industry’’.
Umar said notable achievement has been recorded through the development of petroleum resources as it has contributed a lot to the the global energy demand and economic development over the past decades.
She said these advances equally left profound negative impacts on the natural environment as well as adverse human health effects in most oil producing host communities around the world.
Umar noted that a wide range of environmental pollution, degradation, human health risks and socio-economic problems due to activities of petroleum exploration and production has been experienced by the Niger Delta region over the years.
The chairman observed that the degradation of the Niger Delta region over the years had been compounded by a variety of issues.
She listed the inability of the political elite to effectively manage petroleum-derived revenue and loss of petroleum resource revenues to corruption among the issues.
Umar also blamed ineffective government’s petroleum development policies for the level of degradation in the Niger Delta.
She maintained that effective environmental legislation and implementation of international environmental principles were also critical for sustainable development, good environmental governance, and effective environmental management and protection in the Niger Delta region.
The chairman said that there was also the need to implement effective environmental legislative and institutional framework to improve petroleum industry regulations in Nigeria.
She called for the review of relevant statutory laws and the 1999 Constitution for effective framework for regulation, sustainable objectives and environmental enforcement.
